As I sat on the corner of 118th Avenue and 169th Street braiding my own hair in connected box braids on those hot summer days, I thought the 70s would last forever. Being a 10-year-old Black girl in Jamaica, Queens in those days before crack cocaine made a lot of young preteens and teenagers rich, and sent even more to the penitentiary and the cemetery, were the best of times in this first Black middle-class town in New York City.
My childhood home sat on an intersection that connected the SouthSide of Jamaica to 118th Avenue and Merrick Boulevard. As preteens and teenagers walked from 40 Projects (South Jamaica Houses) to the New Park on Merrick Boulevard and Baisley Boulevard for Park Jams, I observed the Savage Skulls and Seven Crowns cut through my block on many occasions, wearing their cut off jean jacket vests, baring their gangs colors and names.
The many house parties that my eldest sister Cookie gave in the seventies introduced me to one-turntable DJing.
(to be continued in my forthcoming book and film project).
Respectful regards always,
